How to Floss Like a Boss!

Did you know about 20% of Americans do not floss their teeth? Flossing removes plaque and food from your teeth where toothbrush bristles cannot reach. You can have a buildup of plaque in those unreached areas which can lead to gum disease and even tooth decay. Daily flossing is always recommended!

We have found that a lot of people actually do not floss correctly. Follow these four steps and you will be flossing like a boss in no time!

  1. Get a piece of floss around 18 inches in length and wrap it around both middle fingers, with more on one finger than the other. Leave one to two inches of floss to utilize.
  2. Hold the dental floss tightly between your thumb and index finger, slide it between your teeth up-and-down gently.
  3. Glide the dental floss between your teeth making sure to go gently beneath the gum line. Do not use too much pressure, this could cause bleeding and damage to gums.
  4. Move from tooth to tooth, repeating the process and do not forget your very back teeth! You chew most of your food with your back teeth so they get the most work out!

Floss picks have grown in popularity, making flossing more convenient. This makes flossing more portable, however we still recommend using regular floss every so often to ensure you are getting every spot. Dental water jets or water picks are another newer method to flossing; it utilizes a stream of pulsating water to remove plaque and food particles from your teeth. It is best to use this in conjunction with flossing.
